ΑΡΓΟΣ - The Agora's Drain

Argos’ ancient Agora was built on the slopes of Larissa Hill, in a natural hollow, where surface water collected. A basic pre-requisite in the design of this public area was drainage. This problem was solved by the construction of a drain. The original drain (EA) of the late ancient times, around the end of the 6th century BC, was open, and ran north west to south east. It was over 4m wide, had a depth of 1.30 to 1.50m and comprised the eastern boundary of the Agora. During the 4th century BC it was replaced by a closed drain (E) which had 3 parallel channels, separated by porous stone and covered in limestone slabs. After passing through an open triangular catchwater it continued parallel to the eastern side of the North Arcade, and then bent to the west, south of building P. At this point there was a rectangular well (EL) which had been constructed at the base of an impressive terrace. Covering the drain allowed the race track (S) and space for public use to be extended to the east.
